Top tips on looking smart in the office

If you read the blog regularly, you’ll know that dressing smartly not only affects what people think of you, but also how you act and speak.  Here are some top tips to help you look sharp (men, pay attention).

Colours

Whether at home or in the office, and no matter if you’re a man or a woman, it’s important to wear colours that work with your complexion.  As a starting point I recommend ‘Colour for men’ by Carole Jackson, which classifies people by seasons and suggests colours for them.  It’s from the 80s so the style advice is dated, but it’s got some solid ideas.  Women should look for ‘Colour me beautiful’.

Sleeves

Almost every man I see in a suit has sleeves that are too long, making him look like a schoolboy.  Here’s a video that shows the correct length.  Find a tailor and get yours altered.

Breaks

Next comes the ‘break’.  This is where the trouser leg meets the shoe and the material folds.  This video will give you an idea of what it should look like, but again speak to a tailor for advice.

Unavoidable ironing

Unfortunately dressing smartly requires a bit of maintenance.  We might not like it, but ironing shirts, pressing trousers and sharpening skirts is part of the job.   TM Lewin has some videos to help you do things properly.

Shirts

Trousers

Skirts

Now that you’ve got a better idea of what to do, why not share pictures of yourself looking sharp?  Tweet us at @eurofficecouk and maybe you’ll end up Internet Famous.

After way too many years on the factory floor wearing jeans and t-shirts, I now have my own office and dress accordingly. Not quite the suit and tie outfit, but trousers with a crease that could cut you and always a smart shirt…
