Denmark
If you can’t get enough Scandi drama, set yourself up with a thriller in the Danish city of Aarhus: it’s the European capital of culture for 2017. Belize
This Central American country has a rich, mixed history, with ancient Mayan ruins and wonderful marine life. It’s still a place where travellers can discover what nobody else has – in 2016 archaeologists found an enormous royal tomb dating back to 600AD.
Georgia
From its picturesque monasteries to mountain villages, Georgia’s culture was shaped by its place on the Silk Road, a meeting point between Europe and Asia. Discover elegant Art Nouveau architecture and Orthodox churches in the capital Tbilisi, and have a dip in the city’s hot sulphur baths. Best of all, Georgians have been making wine for 8,000 years. That’s definitely an old-world tipple.
Namibia
Home to both the Kalahari and Namib deserts, Namibia offers plenty for adrenaline junkies and those who hanker for the great outdoors. Try paragliding on some of the highest sand dunes in the world, or have a go at kitesurfing and side boarding. Take a safari to see black rhinos; you may come upon an elephant and a cheetah or two – all making their home in the desert.

This Himalayan kingdom introduced the concept of GNH to a world obsessed with GDP. What’s GNH? Gross National Happiness – not surprising for a country that legend says was founded by a Buddhist monk.
