Top 10 New Years Resolutions
It’s the beginning of January and you know what that means don’t you! It’s time to take a long hard look at our lives, decide where there’s room for improvement and make a New Year’s resolution… Or not!
Either way, here are 10 of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions.
1. Lose Weight
Over indulgence during the festive period often has you feeling the need to loosen the belt a notch or three. Out come the celebrity fitness DVD’S and gyms are inundated with membership renewals. It can be tough at times– who’s going to eat all those left over Christmas chocolates? It would be a shame to see them go to waste.
2. Quit Smoking
After a very merry Christmas half of the workforce return to the office with a severe case of the grumps. Heads are bitten off over empty staplers and missing coffee cups but don’t despair, nicotine replacement products are easy to get hold of and the cravings don’t last forever.
3. Save More Money
Christmas has a way of leaving the bank balance feeling a little sorry for itself, hence the urge to save more money. People start bringing packed lunches to work and if you usually read the magazines left in the staff room you’d better hurry before someone cuts out all of the coupons along with the hottest gossip that was on the opposite side.
4. Do More Exercise
Don’t be alarmed if your work colleagues start star jumping around the office or squatting whilst on the phone, they have to fit in their 30 minutes of daily exercise somewhere. Is walking to work with good intentions and then hitching a ride home with a friend in the evening cheating? Nah!
5. Learn Something New / take up a hobby
When one year ends and another begins we tend to reflect on our achievements and goals in life. Now is as good a time as any to learn another language or pick up that guitar that’s been gathering dust in the corner. Life isn’t just about work, work, work, it’s also about finding new ways to enjoy yourself.
6. Cut Down on Drinking
Does “I’m never drinking again”, followed by “keep the noise down, my head hurts” followed by a fried breakfast sound familiar? Is your other half clanging pots and pans together laughing hysterically? Bet you can’t guess what their New Year’s resolution is!
7. Be More Organised
Constantly running around like a headless chicken wears you down after a while. ‘I’ll just check my diary’ isn’t just something people say to make their lives look busier and more interesting than they really are (ok sometimes it is) but mostly it’s an effective way of making sure the day runs smoothly.
8. Read More Books
Can’t find a seat on the train? That’s because it’s full of commuters who have rediscovered the joys of reading, so engrossed in another world that they are blissfully unaware that they missed their stop half an hour ago or more.
9. Spend More Time With the Family
This is probably not a popular one with teenagers. Having to sit round an actual dinner table to eat, making conversation with real words and everything ….. together … urgghhh.

10. Be Less Stressed
When everyone in the office starts demonstrating their ability to count to ten, they’re not letting you know how many demanding emails have just arrived in their inbox all at once or the amount of deadlines they have to meet, they are doing their best to calm themselves down and take it one job at a time.
Do you have any New Year’s resolution success stories or epic fail tales?
Happy New Year!
I’ve not made any resolutions yet. INstead I’ve got a little list of tasks that I’ve been meaning to get around to. I’m quite pleased that I actually made some progress on it over Xmas.
