Office Kitchen Chicken

Office Kitchen Chicken

Dear Diary – I’m #StuckInTheOffice

When I was a child, my older sister made me watch a movie called #Footloose many, many times. And while I appear to have been left with an innate ability to dance, the most memorable part for the movie for me is a scene where the hero faced-down the school bully in a game of tractor chicken.

Now for those of you who are a little in the dark, tractor chicken involves two testosterone fuelled boys, sitting atop of their tractors, at opposite ends of a country lane, driving directly towards each other in the hope that the other one’s nerve will buckle before their own….

As the tension builds and the camera shots pan ever closer, eventually one of the boys will have to give way to the other by pulling their tractor in to a ditch, away from certain death, and in one fell swoop losing both the battle and respect of all his peers.

It was with this in mind, that I found myself the other day standing in the office kitchen staring at some dirty cups in the sink. Having just brought it through to the kitchen, one of these cups was mine and so I started washing it up thinking I may later require the services of this honourable liquid receptacle later in the day.

But as I stood there, I could feel a growing urge to wash up all the other dirty cups.

So I did!

But it didn’t stop there.

Then there were spoons…. So I washed them up….And the odd breakfast bowl, so those got washed too.

Before I knew it, the sink was empty and all the cups, spoons and bowls were gleaming brightly on the draining board and I had washed up a morning’s worth the office’s dirty dishes.

And then I realised…. ….Everyone else was playing office-kitchen chicken, and unlike our adolescent hero in my sister’s favourite movie, I lost.

That’s nice. Not everyone would clean up their mess. There’s always an empty roll left in the toilet. The last person to use the roll up can’t be bothered to throw away the empty one.

Somewhere I’ve still got the Footloose theme on cassette. It was from a ‘Now what’s I call’ album, I think. It was by Kenny Loggins who also did Danger Zone from Top Gun.

Well just think what kind of a mess the kitchen will be in when you have a fortnights holiday… You may want to use this the next time the company is giving out pay rises !!
